Poster Template Instructions (April 2006)
Introduction
Here is the template for making posters. You will need to send your print-ready files to the CITRIS staff 48 hours prior to the event. We will print your poster and provide you with foam core and tape. You can then mount the poster onto the foam core. After being printed the poster can be mounted onto foam core using 2-sided tape.
Deadline
As mentioned above, the deadline for us being able to print posters on the CITRIS printer is 48 hours prior to the event (working days only)-- Meaning that if the event is to occur at noon on Thursday, the deadline is noon on Tuesday. If the event is at noon on Monday, the deadline is noon on the prior Thursday. It takes up to an hour to print each poster and there’s only one printer. It’s not possible to print up to 40+ posters all on the same day.
Best Practice
Since ink must be used to fill in any dark backgrounds, it’s always best to keep the background color white. This saves on ink.
Preview
Use the template file “citris-poster.ppt”. Paste files from your PowerPoint file, arranging them as you wish, then either send the file to the printer or save it to a thumbdrive that we can have it printer from a computer on the citris network. Bear in mind this will likely require a few days to print them all and more time for you to cut the paper and mount it on foam core.
Create poster content
Using PowerPoint, make a standard presentation (8.5 x 11 in. paper, landscape mode, etc.) just as you would for normal presentations. You may have 9 slides. One of these slides should be an abstract. But, you do *not* need a slide that says the title of the poster, or your name (that is included in the poster template). Try to use Arial font, or some other sans-serif font because these look better on posters. You can fill up the entire slide, don't worry about leaving margins. It's good to have a title for each slide just as you would a normal presentation.
Poster template setup
1). In PowerPoint open up the poster template and open up your presentation. Arrange the two sub-windows side by side within the PowerPoint window (i.e. so that both are visible).
2). In the poster template, select: “View” >>> “ Normal.”
In your presentation, select: “View” >>> “Slide Sorter.”
3). In the poster template, edit the poster title, your name and your advisor's name.
(Included are two example slides so that you can see how they look. Obviously, you need to delete these before you start.)
Click “File” >>> “Page setup.”
You should have:
Slides sized for: Custom
Width: 40 in.
Height 30 in.
slides: landscape
Add content to poster template
In this step you will copy each of your 9 slides to the poster template.
1). In the slide sorter, click on the first slide of your presentation. Press Ctrl+C to copy the slide. In the poster template window go to the “Edit” menu and select “Paste Special…”, then select “Picture (Windows Metafile).” This will paste your slide as a metafile into the poster template. Then resize the image you pasted and located it as you wish on the template.
2). Repeat above step for each of the 9 slides (or however many slides you have) in your presentation.
